What's It All About?

This is the all-purpose, heavy-duty hybrid show that covers it all: diversity, substance abuse, and sexual assault.

 

 
The Scenes

• Linda, Ted, and Al could be friends, but racist and sexist assumptions drive them apart. How can they learn to bridge the gaps?

• Anna, Jim, and Pete came to the party together. But as Jim and Pete keep drinking, Anna wonders if they should leave together.

Jessica has been drinking at a Mardi gras party. She’s been flirting with Nick, but should she accept his invitation to go upstairs and “get some more beads”?

When Nicole took Tom back to her room, she just wanted to kiss. He wanted more. Will he abide by her wishes?

Objectives & Discussion Topics

SCENE I: : Linda, Ted, and Al (Racism and Sexism)

• What subtle prejudices does each of us carry with us and where do they come from?

• Othering: how do generalizations about people dehumanize them?

• What is the best way to get to know someone who is different?

SCENE II: The Party (Substance Abuse)

• Choices about drinking behavior: responsible drinking vs. problem drinking.

• Binge drinking.

• Drinking and driving.

• Alcohol poisoning.

SCENE III: Nick & Jessica at the Party (Sexual Communication and Substance Abuse)

Does Alcohol effect jugement and control? Is there a link between alcohol and sexual assault?

• What are date rape drugs?

Do we experience conflicted emotion around sexuality?

Do we use sexuality to gain acceptance. If so, can we control the results?

Does language create a rape-prone culture?

• How do you assert your desire if someone isn’t listening?

SCENE IV: Tom and Nicole at her place (Sexual Assault)

• What is rape? Is it sex or assault?

• What do you do when your partner says "No"?

• Who rapes and who gets raped?

• How can you avoid potentially dangerous situations? Do you always know when you are in one?

• What can you do if you have been sexually assaulted?

 

The Sex & Drugs Show

This hybrid show covers the basics of substance abuse and sexual communication/sexual assault. Behaviors discussed include types of drinking behavior, the effect of substance abuse on academic performance, what happens when alcohol and sexual communication collide, as well as the difficult subject of date rape.

 

The Scenes

• Anna, Jim, and Pete came to the party together. But as Jim and Pete keep drinking, Anna wonders if they should leave together.

• Jim and Richard have an important assignment due. When Jim goes to Richard's room to work on it, Richard is stoned. Will they finish the assignment?
